Building permits required

Local residents and seasonal home owners should be aware of Cameron County's building and sewage permitting requirements. Building Code Official Russ Braun points out that the state's Uniform Construction Code (UCC) affects all types of construction.

A building permit is required whenever a new dwelling is constructed, altered or demolished. Permits are also required for certain additions. Work on recreational cabins does not need to comply with the construction requirements of the UCC, but permits are still required.

Almost all new dwelling construction requires some type of a sewer permit.

Even though most agricultural buildings, recreational cabins, small sheds and garages are exempt from the UCC, they may still require a zoning permit. Braun pointed out that the UCC allows a building code official to halt construction and levy a fine.
