Students strut their science stuff

Cameron County's competitors in the Science Olympiad polished off their visit to Eldred with a stop at the World War II Musem. Several area schools sent students to last week's Science Olympiad, hosted by Otto- Eldred School District.

Fourth-graders participated in Barge Building and the Naked Egg Drop.

They were required to build a barge from aluminum foil. The vessel that held the heaviest cargo won. Winners from Mrs. Zoschg's class at Cameron County were Haley Abriatis and Paige Scott.

For the egg drop, students used paper and masking tape to construct a container to protect an egg that was dropped from a ladder. Cameron County's winners were Erin Garrigan and Paul Etchepare.

Fifth-graders participated in the Rubber Band Catapult and Cool It.

The team with the most accurate catapult from Mrs. Ream's class at Cameron County was Cameron Horning and Nate Andrus.

Cool It involved construction of insulating material to prevent an ice cube from melting. Cameron County winners were Andrew Grimone and Eric Spehalski.

The sixth-grader competition involved building a bridge, using straws and straight pins. Goal was to build the longest bridge that would bear the weight of a chalkboard eraser. Winners from Mr. Lovett's sixth-grade class at Cameron County were Eddie Lamont and Avery Smith.

Sixth-graders were also tested in weight measurement and estimating, with Lucy Holjencin and Tyler Burfield winning.

Eleven schools sent contestants to Otto-Eldred. Medal winners from Cameron County were Erin Garrigan, Paul Etchepare, Haley Abriatis, Paige Scott, Cameron Horning and Nate Andrus.
