Area's history recalled at 'Little Museum'
By Alex Davis, News Assistant

World War II casualties from Cameron County are being honored in a special display that will debut over the Memorial Day weekend in the Little Museum at Sterling Run.

A picture and a biography of each of the soldiers will be on display, according to Cameron County Historical Society board member Mike Wennin.

The organization also plans to feature an exhibit on the famous Bucktail regiment, which departed from Driftwood to fight in the Civil War.

Wennin said there will also be a new display recalling the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), as well as an exhibit about the carving on a huge rock in Sterling Run.

The former Lumber Township schoolhouse that's now the historical society museum will also become more "kidfriendly," Wennin said. Schoolaged children will be able to use several antiques, such as a Sylvania switchboard, air raid siren and a typewriter.

Lumber Township School Board bought the building in 1931. It was opened by the Historical Society in 1971. A third room was added in 1976 to house the collection of General Joseph McNarney's military and personal effects.

The museum is staffed by volunteers. Regular hours are Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Details can be found at the museum's website, www.thelittlemuseum.org.
