College-accredited classes to start Pennsylvania Highlands Community College will offer accredited college classes at the Potter County Education Council (PCEC). The course is designed to prepare students for career opportunities in the heritage tourism industry. The school is developing a 21-credit certificate in heritage tourism management, in cooperation with the PCEC and the Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties. Instruction gets underway on May 15. Students can enroll in individual courses to acquire specific skills, or they can opt for the full seven-course schedule to qualify for the certificate. Classes will be held at either Coudersport or St. Marys, with real-time teleconferencing available between the two sites. Semester 1 (summer 2007) will cover regional history and tourism, as well as introduction to business. Semester 2 (fall 2007) spotlights business math and customer service. Semester 3, set for next spring, will include an introduction to accounting and a survey of hospitality and tourism. The final semester (summer 2008) focuses on principles of marketing.
