Through An 'Old Timer's' Eyes
By Howard 'Mac' McDonald

Spring is a time of the year when everything is awakening. When the sun shines, it seems to make it all the more sweeter In church on Sunday, the sun pouring through the stained glass windows added a special touch.

Spring also means that school is about to end. It's also prom time. For that tradition, new gowns are bought, tuxedos are rented and the florists are swamped with orders.

I remember my last prom. I worked part-time for a wealthy man and he made that a very pleasant night by letting me use his 1948 Lincoln Continental for the occasion.

He also bought me a new suit, gave me one of his $50 hand-painted neckties, and put a $50 bill in my hand. His last comment was, "I don't want someone who works for me going to the prom looking like a rag picker." Another one of his comments was, "Youth is wasted on the young."

The back page of last week's Endeavor showed the beautiful young ladies and their handsome escorts for the Cameron County prom. That was quite a keepsake

Last Saturday afternoon, I spotted the cowboy on the old railroad grade and just had to stop. As you'll see from our story on him in this edition, he is riding around the world. I didn't get to talk to him very long, as we were besieged by a couple of women and I could not get a word in edgewise.

I tried to give him some money, but he would not take any. He said information on how to donate appears on his website.

Most of the time he camps out but when he finds the right place he will stay indoors.

May 5 is, of course, known as Cinco de Mayo. I wonder if all the illegal aliens from Mexico will be celebrating the fact that they continue get away with living in our country.

April showers were supposed to bring May flowers, but so far it's just the grass that is growing like crazy. Where I live, the grass nuts have been cutting for two weeks.

From now until October, all you hear in my neighborhood is the sound of lawn mowers. They cut from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, and it sure does get irritating.

Sheep make good lawn mowers and it doesn't cost much to run them. You could also have an income from them, selling their wool.

I get a kick out of the sheep on the mattress commercials. The one I like best is where they are in jail because one of them pulled the tag from a mattress. They are in a cell with this guy and he asks them what they did to get put in jail. The one sheep answers, "We are here because we tore a man apart."

Mother's Day (May 13) is nearing. Sometimes we forget the sacrifices our mothers have made for us. There is no stronger love than a mother's love.

I know I put a lot of gray hairs on my mother when I was growing up.

If your mother is still here on earth, let me tell what it the best present you can give her for Mother's day: tell her you love her.
