Med & Mary Ostrum Married 65 Years!

Med and Mary (Shoup) Ostrum of Altoona recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

They were married May 2, 1942 at St. Marks Roman Catholic Church in Emporium.

Their children include: Dale (Vikky) Ostrum of Washington State, Gail (Larry) Vergason of North Carolina, Lynn Ostrum of Altoona and Mona Rogers in Bellewood; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Med worked for many years at Sylvania in Emporium. In 1943, he and Emporium's John Minno were assigned to set up a new Sylvania plant in Brookville.

In 1964, with the Brookville plant's closing, Med and Mary moved to Burlington, Iowa, where he remained employed by Sylvania. The following year, Med returned to the Emporium plant and the couple returned home.

That assignment lasted until 1972, when Med's work with Sylvania took the couple to Altoona. He remained on until until the closing of the plant in 1988.

Med and Mary have always been active in community affairs. In Emporium, Med was a Boy Scout leader, serving as both Scoutmaster and Commissioner. While in Brookville, he received Scouting's highest award, the Silver Beaver.

Other activities in Emporium included president of Kiwanis, grand knight of the K of C, and president of the Community Chest.

Today, Med and Mary are officers in Altoona's Food Distribution Center and they volunteer at the Railroad Museum. They enjoy travelng by train and bus and Med remains an active fisherman.
