Downtown road work: 'temporary inconvenience'
By James Moate News Assistant

Traffic disruptions on Emporium's main throroughfare brought to mind the old PennDOT slogan: "Temporary Inconvenience; Permanent Improvement."

State and local contracts with Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. allowed the State College-based company to start the milling and paving work on Monday. Frustrated motorists were at least able to view a piece of the town's history, as they saw the original brickwork foundation of Allegany Street after the macadam was removed.

Hawbaker's crew first dug in on the borough's west side and will proceed to the line just before the Rt. 120 bridge on the east end of town.

Various streets are being repaved this summer, including Woodland and East Allegany avenues, Fourth, Vine, Maple, Chestnut and Third streets. Small repairs will also be made to Howard Circle, South Pine and Second streets. Milling work was expected to be finished in time for the weekend.

Repaving of Rt. 120 from the Sinnemahoning Portage Creek bridge through the business district to the west end of town is scheduled to start on Monday.
