'It's our right' To the editor: Whether you are for or against the consolidation of Cameron County, it is unacceptable for an elected official to vote against allowing the referendum to appear on the November ballot. It is the right of the people to make this extremely important decision themselves. I've heard some of the township and borough officials' reasons for why they will vote against the referendum. None really fly with me. I've read the available information and I still have some questions. But if it's not on the ballot then I won't have the chance to ask them. Putting the question to the people only opens up the opportunity for more debate. These officials all have a vested interest in turning this issue down. Are they really looking out for what's best for the masses, or for themselves? Property taxes are out of reach for many people and with things as they are now, it will only get worse. Should this handful of residents be allowed to stop something that could help us all? The ways of yesterday will not work in the Emporium of tomorrow. Annette Campbell Emporium |
