Better to wait

To the editor:

The elected township and borough officials of Cameron County have been asked by the county commissions to pass an ordinance authorizing a referendum on the consolidation of all of Cameron County's municipalities and the adoption of a Home Rule Charter.

The commissioners should have proposed this when they were entering office, not when leaving office. That way they would be responsible to see everything through. We will have a new board in January. It is not fair to the new commissioners to saddle them with a charter and consolidation that they were not involved in constructing. Let the new commissioners study the concept and make their recommendations.

This is serious business. To abolish a whole level of governing bodies between the people and Harrisburg is not to be done lightly.

There are many unanswered questions being asked by those elected officials who have studied the charter and have the responsibility and duty to see that their constituents will not end up with a millstone around their necks.
