Saturday night's "community swim" at the pool in Emporium celebrates a joyous occasion.
Cameron (C. J.) Lehman, who turns three next week, captured the hearts of area residents earlier this year as news spread of his valiant battle against a rare form of cancer.
"The fantastic news we have to report is that the cancer is gone!" said his mother, Lorah Lehman.
That doesn't mean C. J. is out of the woods, but it gives his parents renewed hope that he can live a normal life. James and Lorah Lehman still face monthly trips for check-ups and considerable costs for three different medications C.J. must take.
Community members have contributed an estimated $10,000 to help defray the family's extraordinary expenses. Saturday night's community swim, from 8 to 10:30, is the latest project by the school pool's staff to support a worthwhile local cause.
Admission price is $2.00. There will be games, including volleyball and "penny hunts," food, music and prizes.
"We can't say enough about the way the community has responded," Lorah said. "Cameron still has good days and bad days - - by bad days, I mean he just tires real easily."
His cancer condition is now considered Stage 5, she added, describing it as a "maintenance stage."
Six months ago, the Lehmans recently welcomed a second son, Jedidiah, into their lives, yet another cause for joy in a year that started out with concern and uncertainty about the future.
