Through An 'Old Timer's' Eyes
By Howard 'Mac' McDonald

Baseball season is on its last legs and football season is upon us. NASCAR is about over and school is about to start.

The end of summer brings a lot of activity to our lives and Labor Day signals the end of swimming pools

Hunting season is in the air and the archers are scouting their hunting areas. I watch a lot of the hunting programs on TV and have figured out that to take those kind of hunts, you must have to put out the big bucks. Those dream hunts don't fit into my budget.

Very seldom do I go a whole night without dreaming. If the dream has some kind of theme to it, I can remember it very clearly. If I have had a late night snack, my dreams are all mixed up and I don't recall what they were about.

They say that people who dream a lot are not playing with a full deck and I believe it, as my deck of bicycles only has 51 cards. That sure makes playing Solitaire a little difficult.

I have had recurring dreams and one I remember in particular. During the Vietnam conflict, when we were doing a lot of flying, I would dream that we would crash into the ocean and the plane would go along under the water like a submarine.

In the early days of spring, I remember sitting in school, looking out the window and daydreaming about what I was going to do when that bell rang and it was time to go home.

A lot of people pray that they will hit the lottery. I never pray for things that I know I can never have, but I do dream about winning the big one. Dreaming about it does not obligate you for what you would do with all the money.

I don't know if animals dream, but sometimes when my dog Sarge is sleeping, he will yip and move his legs like he is running. My wife says he is dreaming that he's chasing something. If he dreams anything like I do, he will never catch what he is chasing.

"Dream when you're feeling blue. Dream, that's the thing to do. Just watch the smoke rings rise in the air, and you'll find your share of memories there. So dream, dream, dream."

Those are the words from an old tune back when I was a young man. I wore out two pairs of shoes dancing to it.

Once I had a dream that I ate a five-pound marshmallow, and when I woke up, my pillow was gone.

I watched Celebrity Jeopardy last week and I was amazed at the easy questions. I know they don't want to embarrass these well-known people, but they should be offended by the questions.

A hundred thousand dollars was given to charity each night and that is very commendable of Jeopardy, but let's take the questions out of the fourth grade.

Television will

soon be inundated with political advertising. The Republicans will be saying something about Hillary's cleavage and the Democrats will be harping about the poor management of the war. The infighting in each party will be down and dirty, as it seems no one is interested in the real issues.

After the conventions, it will really get smutty. Oh well, there is still the Cartoon Network, but who can stand the violence in the cartoons these days?

The biggest social event that takes place in our remote section was held last Wednesday: the annual Rotary Picnic.

The atmosphere was outstanding, as just about everyone I saw was having a good time. Someone had a complaint, but those are the people who couldn't have a good time, no matter where they were. Keep up the good work, Rotarians.
