Motorcyclist killed near Wharton
Portville, N.Y., man hit car head on

A Cattaraugus County, N.Y., man died Sunday evening when his motorcycle collided with a car on Route 872, south of the East Fork Road in Wharton Township, Potter County.

State police said 52-year-old Steven Warner of Portville was headed north when his 2003 Harley Davidson crossed the center line and struck a southbound Dodge sedan driven by James Rider of Coudersport.

Rider told police that he swerved in an attempt to avoid contact with the motorcycle, but Warner appeared to make no effort to steer his cycle back into his own lane. Warner was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Potter County Coroner Ken Wingo.

Rider and his passenger, Carol McCreary, were taken to Charles Cole Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
