A promising football season opened on a positive note for the Cameron County Red Raiders.
They rolled over visiting Brockway, 37-0, in their debut and were heavy favorites entering Friday night's game with Smethport.
It sets the stage for next Friday's big clash at Coudersport with the defending Allegheny Mountain League and PIAA District 9 champion Falcons. The winner will emerge as the favorite to win this year's AML North Division.
Last Friday's win was an impressive debut for coach Tony Defilippi's troops.
"We executed very well, offensively and defensively," Defilippi said. "We talked about getting off to a fast start this season and we were able to do that."
Speedy senior Charlie Holjencin ran for 93 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries to lead a running game that racked up 245 yards.
Jordan Crane connected on four of his seven pass attempts for 81 more yards. Seth McManigle caught two of those aerials to account for 51 yards.
Holjencin scored on runs of two and 18 yards in the first quarter, helping the Red Raiders to a 16-0 lead. Crane and Abram Zoschg ran for the two-point conversions.
Cameron Clingan, who had a long touchdown called back on a holding penalty, scored from seven yards out. Crane hit Zoschg with a pass for the conversion and a 24-0 lead.
Jarek Holjencin blocked a punt and Andy Lippert scooped up the loose ball and ran six yards for another TD before halftime, making it 30-0.
Charlie Holjencin added Cameron's final touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard run. He also kicked the extra point.
Zoschg, one of 10 Raiders to carry the ball, chipped in with five carries for 50 yards, while Darrick Mason had four totes for 31 yards. Mason was especially effective as a blocker clearing lanes for his running mates.
Cameron County controlled the line of scrimmage, limiting Brockway to just 119 total yards.
The Red Raiders were flagged for eight penalties and lost a fumble, but other than that they were nearly flawless in a crowd-pleasing performance.
