Cleanup time in Emporium

Emporium Borough is taking steps to clean up unsightly neighborhoods by enforcing ordinances prohibiting debris on private property.

Borough Council members discussed the crackdown at this week's meeting. Borough Manager Don Reed told Endeavor News the crackdown will focus in particular on unlicensed and unregistered vehicles littering properties throughout the borough.

Residents have an opportunity to get rid of trash during the borough's fall clean-up on Saturday, Oct. 27. From 8 a.m. to noon, they can bring refuse to the borough's equipment shed on Second Street. Elderly and disabled residents can arrange pickups by calling 486- 0890.

In other business this week, Council members:

--agreed to purchase a new sanitation truck at a cost of $168,000.

--announced that applications are being accepted to replace two borough police officers. Mike Weber, a part-time officer, has already left the force and Jason Miller, who is currently full-time, will be leaving on Sept 29.

--announced that the former public library building, most recently occupied by Tino's Italian Restaurant, has been put up for bid following an executive session. Bids are due by Oct. 2.
