"Project Pink," a graduation project created last year by three Austin Area School seniors, is being carried on by a member of the Class of 2008. Sarah Kio has taken on the major American Cancer Society fund-raiser, started last year by Courtney Walker, Ashley Kio and Kiley Walker.
Vera VanWhy has once again signed on as the advisor to help Sarah. Last year's Project Pink raised $1,700 for breast cancer awareness.
This year, a hoagie sale is underway, with orders due by Sept. 24 at 647-5412, and delivery scheduled Oct. 6. Cost is $2.00 per sandwich.
Pink ribbons can be purchased at the Wharton Tavern for $1.00. These are being displayed throughout September and October. Ribbons are also on sale at the firehall during bingo on Saturday.
A Project Pink savings account has been opened at Northwest Savings Bank on Turner Street in Austin. Checks should be made payable to Vera VanWhy/Project Pink and can be mailed directly to the bank or to VanWhy at 170 Summit St., Austin PA 16720. "Attn: Project Pink Account" should be printed on the outside of the envelope.
The big event is the Project Pink Walk on Sunday, Oct. 7. Registration is $15 per person. Kids under 10 can walk for free with a registered adult. The walk will start at noon and last all afternoon at the Austin baseball field.
Refreshments will be available and prize drawings will be held throughout the afternoon.
