School board splits over teacher issue

Members of the Cameron County Area School Board engaged in some heated debate Thursday night.

The issue was how best to continue meeting state mandates requiring the district to provide "English as a second language" (ESL). After more an hour of discussion, the board decided on a course of action by a 5-2 vote, with Bill Bogart and Annetta Horning dissenting. Member Paul Malizia abstained.

As a result, the district established two part-time teacher positions, one handling ESL exclusively in both schools and the other responsible for teaching gifted students in both schools.

Additional details on the board's decision will appear in next week's edition.

In other action, board member Robert Horning announced his resignation. He is moving out of the district.
