Local firefighters pushing smoke detectors Volunteer firefighters are not just concerned about extinguishing fires. Prevention is a critical part of their responsibilities. In recognition of this, members of the Tri-County Firefighters Assn. are promoting the use of smoke detectors. During a recent meeting at the Austin Firehall, delegates discussed steps that can be taken to better inform the public on the topic. They agreed to work with schools, civic groups, news media and local broadcast stations. Previous public relations materials have stressed the need to replace smoke detector batteries every year, but few people are aware that detectors have a life expectancy of about 10 years. In other business, delegates discussed preparation for an outbreak of avian flu. Dr. Glenn Williams, a pandemic specialist, warned that federal and state assistance could be lacking in the event of a local outbreak. Dr. Williams also said vaccine stockpiles are inadequate and the effectiveness of the treatment is debatable. |
