CCHS grad dies in crash

Kaylee Ann Harford, 18, of Emporium, died Thursday (Sept. 27, 2007) of injuries sustained in a one-car crash in Cresson Township, Cambria County.

Ms. Harford was a freshman chemistry major at St. Francis University in Loretto.

She was a back seat passenger in a car that went out of control on curve on the Cresson-Loretto Road, plunging over an embankment and striking a tree.

A second passenger, 18-yearold Kayla Nicodemus of Bedford, died on Wednesday of injuries suffered in the crash.

Two other 18-year-old female students were seriously injured, including the driver, Jessica Rivera of Maryland.

Born March 2, 1989 in Fairfax County, Va., Kaylee was the daughter of Arthur Harford of Virginia and Catherine Zito Harford of Emporium. A resident of Emporium for most of her life, she was a 2007 graduate of Cameron County Area High School, where she was an honor student.

"She was just a great kid, all the way around," said Cameron County High School Vice Principal Lynn Newcomer.

Kaylee was active in sports and other school activities. She was a member of the golf and softball teams and was a cheerleader. She was also chosen as the school's 2006 Prom Queen, and Flaming Foliage Festival representative.

She is survived by her parents; one brother, Brian Harford of Emporium; and her maternal grandfather, Augustus Zito of Emporium.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Arthur and Celia Harford, and her maternal grandmother, Anna Mae Zito.

Father Gabriel Zeis, president of St. Francis University, officiated at funeral services held Sunday in Emporium.

A funeral service was also held a at St. Francis University. On Monday night, students also a candlelight ceremony as a memorial to Miss Harford and as a prayer vigil for the other students who were injured.

Campus ministry at St. Francis and counselors at Cameron County High School have been available for grieving students.

Ms. Harford was buried in St. Mark Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Francis University, P.O. Box 600, Loretto PA 15940.
