Bullying in school at forefront Austin Area School held a bullying prevention program for students in grades two through eight. It was provided through Potter County Human Services, in cooperation with local school districts, the Pa. Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Dickinson Mental Health Services. This Olweus Bullying Prevention Program drew high marks from Austin School Superintendent Matt Hutcheson. "Our students are more cognizant of the issues surrounding bullying," Hutcheson said. "The number of serious infractions has decreased, especially at the elementary school." The superintendent said his staff has worked to document incidents and target discussions on student expectations. "Our overall atmosphere at the school appears to be positive," Hutcheson said. "Students are assuming responsibility for their actions. I am looking forward to a greater emphasis on educational issues, as opposed to excessive time spent on discipline." Austin Principal Kim Rees presented awards to Austin students who had committed no behavior infractions and had perfect attendance. Olweus Bullying Prevention Program centers around weekly classroom meetings to discuss bullying situations, a questionnaire, and consistently addressing bullying behaviors. Once a week for at least the next three years, teachers or school staff will take 10 to 20 minutes to talk to students about bullying. Results of the students' answers on the anonymous questionnaires will be compared from year to year to determine needs and evaluate success. Parents and members of the community are invited to participate. For more information, contact Potter County Human Services at 544-7315. |
