Band Festival

Coming

To the editor:

Cameron County will be privileged, once again, by hosting the annual PMEA District 2 Band Festival at the Cameron County High School from January 9-12.

Approximately 200 musicians from 16 school districts will practice for two full days and then present concerts for the public on Jan. 11 and Jan. 12.

As in the past, the host school, with a great deal of help from the community, provides each high school student that participates a "welcome package." This is a wonderful way to promote your business or organization. It will also help the students and their families remember their experience while in Cameron County.

Most anything that you feel would be appropriate for students would be appreciated. If you prefer, you could donate money and we could purchase snacks for the packages.

Anyone with questions should contact Bonnie Spehalski at 486-1516 or Sharon Wykoff at 486-1758.

On behalf of the PMEA District 2 Band Festival Committee, we thank all of you for your support.

Gas Prices

To the editor:

CEOs of several large companies were invited to Congress to speak about gas prices. However, nothing definitive was offered, other than that's just the nature of the oil business.

Yet, all companies netted their largest profits. Why can't our federal government tax the oil companies on excessive profits so that the rates become more reasonable?

One oil company is advertising how profits are being used for research on fuels. But there's no time limit as to when something will be developed and in use. They have perfected manipulation on us.

With all of those profits, why don't they reward the buyers of gasoline with price reductions?

What has our federal government done? Well, sometime many years from now, autos will have to get more miles per gallon. What does that do for us now?

Big oil is still being allowed to make tons of money, while millions of Americans pay the price. This doesn't have to happen, does it?
