Emporium native Jeanne Miglicio was welcomed to the Cameron County legal community Monday during a brief ceremony at the courthouse. She joined the local bar association as her colleagues looked on.
Judge Richard Masson administering the oath and read a brief essay he had found on the importance of attorneys in rural areas. They are generally closer to the people they represent and can appreciate the broader aspects of a community, he pointed out.
Miglicio said she decided several years ago that she wanted to help people, but she wasn't sure how.
"People know me in this area because I started the Pizza Palace," Miglicio explained. "But you can't really have that kind of a business without the drive to be busy. When I was in that business, I liked the problem solving and I liked helping people."
She spent much of her early life in Cameron County, before her family moved to Austin, where she completed her high school education. She returned to Emporium in 1992.
Miglicio said she intends to eventually open a general law practice in Cameron County.
She graduated summa cum laude in 2004 from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford before attending Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich., where she graduated cum laude in July. She is now attending Georgetown University of Law in Washington, D.C., studying tax law.
The new attorney is married to Denny Miglicio and has two daughters, Eryn Fiebig and Casey Freer. She is the daughter of the late Wayne and Kathryn Rees.
