Military veterans in
Pennsylvania had to be feeling
extra special earlier this month.
After all, some PennDOT
employees took three days to
honor them.
A news release from
PennDOT advised that all
driver license and photo centers
would be closed on Saturday,
Nov. 10, and again on Monday,
Nov. 12, for Veterans Day
which, by the way, was neither
of those days; it was Nov. 11,
as always.

St. Marys City Council
expects to freeze real estate
taxes for 2008. Council
members last week said they
expect to maintain the tax rate
at 16.42 mills. The budget
anticipates expenses next year
of $5.5 million.

Reports of public libraries'
demise are greatly exaggerated.
Some 51.6 percent of
American adults used their
public library at least once over
the past year.

Bruzzi Cleaners, an
institution in downtown
Coudersport, is celebrating its
60th anniversary this year. It's
now operated by Jim Bruzzi,
son of the founders, Theresa
Bruzzi and her husband, the late
Frank Bruzzi.
The dry cleaning business
opened in 1947 on Water Street.
A new building was
constructed in 1968. In 1996,
the business was relocated to
South Main Street, which was

formerly the town's
laundromat.
The death of Frank Bruzzi in
2005 was the end of an era. He
and his two brothers, John and
Augustine, had been fixtures in
Coudersport for decades.
Augustine was an electrical
contractor. John owned and
operated Bruzzi's Laundry,
now Twin Tier Linen Service,
on North East Street.

Scientists are nearly
unanimous in their conclusion
that global warming is manmade,
rather than a natural
phenomenon.
The amount of carbon
dioxide emissions are up by a
whopping 35 percent since
1990, according to the National
Academy of Sciences. That's
the result of increased global
population growth, additional
wealth and development
around the world, and
increased industrial use of
fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide
builds up in the atmosphere,
trapping the sun's heat and
warming the planet.

A new veterans post that will
be built to replace the one that
burned near Port Allegany will
be nearly than twice as big.
Earl Stromberg, president of
Port Allegany Veterans
Memorial Inc., said plans have
been approved to build a 6,800-
square-foot post home. An
arsonist destroyed the original
3,500-square-foot building in
July. That building was
constructed in 1952 and was
used by the Veterans of Foreign
Wars and American Legion. A

major upgrade took place in
1992.
Stromberg said the new
building will have a bigger
banquet room and kitchen area.
An insurance settlement will
provide about $300,000 and
another $200,000 will have to
be raised.
17,000
A savings of about $17,000
in electric bills could be realized
in Kane Area School District
with a simple change in
habits: turning off computers at
night.
Mark Candalor, technology
coordinator school, calculated
the estimated savings for the
district.
250
Some 250 volunteers showed
up on Veterans Day in Elk
County to fill care packages for
soldiers on behalf of the regional
Letters From Home
Christmas Campaign. About
6,100 soldiers will receive a
package filled with snacks and
various gifts. The group also
mailed 29,100 cards.
"Christmas is always our
biggest campaign," said Chris
Jovenitti, founder of Letters
From Home.
Since 2003, the program has
provided 39,750 packages to
soldiers, sailors and Marines,
as well as sent 255,000 letters.
Letters From Home was recently
honored by the
President's Council on Service
and Civic Participation as one
of the nation's outstanding
military support operations.
