About 20 members and guests of the Cameron County Genealogy Club recently took a step back in time with a hike into Canoe Run to check out the ruins of the coke ovens that once roared there. Before their trek, the hikers viewed photos of area coal operations and heard an explanation of coke processing from member Mike Wennin. They then headed into the area where several houses once stood and progressed to the ovens, which were fed by mule-pulled carts. Gravity-fed buckets were used to transport the coal down the mountain and across the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning. Club leader Wendy Davis said the hikes have been a success and similar field trips will continue next year.
