Fugitive surrenders
The teenager suspected of burglarizing a Shinglehouse grocery store turned himself in this week to state police from Denton Hill.
Nicholas Matasich, 19, of Shinglehouse was committed to the Potter County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail after being arraigned on charges of burglary, theft, and criminal trespass. He was being sought in connection to a break-in and theft at the Shinglehouse IGA on Nov. 16.
Police allege Matasich stole 36 cartons of cigarettes valued at $1,500 and about $50 in rolled and loose change. His identity was determined after a photo of him from the store's video surveillance camera was published in area newspapers. Shinglehouse Police Chief Brad Buchholz for his role in negotiating the surrender.
Wire theft arrests
Two New York State residents have been committed to the McKean County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail each after being arraigned on charges of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.
State police from the Kane barracks report that a witness saw 43-year-old Kandace Mabee of Hinsdale and Nicholas Wilber, 26, of Olean cutting copper wire from along the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad tracks next to Route 155, about three miles south of Route 6, in Liberty Township.
The pair was allegedly observed loading the wire onto a sled, and putting it into a vehicle. The witness summoned police and the suspects were detained by Port Allegany Borough Police until state troopers arrived.
Medicine, cash stolen
Sometime between Dec. 3 and 11 thieves entered an unlocked vehicle in the borough of Emporium and stole a bottle of prescription medication, as well as an estimated $170 in cash.
As a result of this and similar incidents, Emporium Borough Polie advise residents to lock their homes and vehicles when leaving them unattended, even if for a short period of time.
Assault charge
Charges of simple assault, making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct have been filed against William R. Foley, 24, of Emporium.
Borough police say that on Dec. 6 he allegedly struck two victims in the face and damaged property.
Theft of services
A second Roulette Township resident is being charged with theft of services for allegedly placing personal garbage in a private dumpster in the village of Roulette.
Pamela J. Lanphere, 49, was cited by state police at Denton Hill.
Suspicious activity
State police at Denton Hill are looking into a perplexing incident reported to them on Wednesday morning.
Vicky A. Repp, 39, of Genesee said that she witnessed an individual holding three containers, apparently gas cans, on her property. The suspect fled without incident in a red, compact pickup truck.
Car slips on ice
A Genesee woman escaped injury when her Jeep Cherokee slipped on ice on Rt. 449, one mile south of Gold in Potter County.
Police said Christie Kerschner was northbound when the vehicle hit a patch of ice, skidded off the road, and struck a tree. Kerschner was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
Harrassment charge
A Potter County man faces harassment charges for an incident at a residence in Sharon Township early Saturday morning.
State police allege that Dennis Ayers, 52, of Shinglehouse, faces charges for going to the home of Daniel Harris on Wheeler Hill Road and threatening bodily harm to Harris during a disagreement.
