Impressive home debut for Raiders

Mike Baker is poised for a solid 2007-08 season.
Cameron County wrestling fans finally got a chance to see their local favorites in action on the home mat Tuesday and they were not disappointed.

The Red Raiders (4-1) toppled Oswayo Valley, 37-24, led by the undefeated junior Randy Schatz (5-0). He pinned Devin Crozier in 59 seconds at 145 lbs.

Senior Mike Baker (3-1) fell from the ranks of the unbeatens during a thriller with OV's talented Brandon Slater at 160. Slater prevailed, 8-6. The two are likely to meet again down the road.

Another senior, Taylor Songer improved to 3-2 with a 17-4 major decision at 152.

Matt Bailey continued his strong wrestling, improving to 4-1 with a pin at 135.

Marcus Mullens (3-2) outlasted Tyler Saulter, 2-1, at 189.

Sophomore Dom Manginell boosted his mark to 4-1 at 125 win a forfeit win. Tanner Johnson (3-2, 171) and Bryce Frey (2-3, 140) won by forfeit.

Tyler Bidwell (3-2) was pinned by a tough Logan Kellogg at 130. Matt Burke (2- 3) was a 6-3 loser at 285.

In Saturday's season opener against a tough field at the Kane Duals, the Red Raiders posted a 3-1 record before ending a grueling day early due to a winter storm.

Schatz ran roughshod over the 145-lb. field with a 4-0 record. He recorded three pins, the longest of which lasted a mere 83 seconds, and won a fourth match by forfeit.

Manginell also had three pins at 125. At 130, Tyler Bidwell had a pair of pins and a forfeit.

Baker went 3-0 at 160. He bumped up to 171 to take on Johnsonburg's tough Dylan Nelson and was pinned in 70 seconds.

Bailey had a pair of pins and a decision at 140. Songer also had two falls as he went 2-2 at 152.

Burke (285), Mullens (189/ 215) and Johnson (171/189) each were 2-2. Frey had a pin against Kane at 135. Hunter Bardo (1-0) was awarded a forfeit win at 160 against Johnsonburg.

The Red Raiders lost to St. Marys 50-21, while winning over Punxsutawney (39-35), Kane (48-30) and Johnsonburg (42-36).

Cameron County heads to St. Marys for a rematch against the tough Dutchmen on Friday.
