SAP FLOWIN' MAPLE WEEKEND
      Sap was running over the weekend and so were the fourth annual Potter/Tioga Maple Weekend tours. Local sugar shacks opened up their doors to locals, tourists and anyone else interested in learning how maple products are made. Among those visiting local sugarbushes was a group of foreign diplomats who spent the weekend in Potter County.

      Abuse of alcohol and other drugs is taking a huge toll in area communities, resulting in increased crime, medical costs and property damage. In order to come to terms with the issues, area citizens must recognize the extent of the problem.

      Fatal car crash ELDRED -- A McKean County resident died in a onevehicle crash on Route 446 in Eldred Township last Thursday morning. State police said Robert Sisson, 46, of Eldred, drove off the road and into a ditch, where his car struck a culvert and overturned several times before coming to rest on its roof.

FINED FOR POLLUTING STREAM
Expansion will address plant deficiencies
      Several permit violations at the Emporium sewage treatment plant on South Mountain Road have forced the Mid- Cameron Authority to speed up its expansion project. Last week, the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) fined the Authority $15,900 for polluting the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning River during a half-year period last summer.

Sewage plant operator fined
      State officials levied a $3,450 fine against the operator of the Ulysses Municipal Authority sewage treatment plant due to improperly measured chlorine levels discharged last September. A Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection spokesman said the discharge "caused significant harm to aquatic life" in a 250-yard stretch of a tributary to the Genesee River.

Cameron County survey underway
      Needs of Cameron County residents are being measured with an Internet survey. Northern Tier Community Action is asking citizens to complete the survey so results can be used to compile into a report identifying needs and resources for low-income persons, human service providers and others.

GLOBETROTTER TO PERFORM
Seth Franco in Emporium for three days
      A former Harlem Globetrotter whose basketball-handling skills are world renowned is coming to Emporium for a community presentation, a basketball clinic and a program for youth. Seth Franco will visit for three days starting on Monday, April 14, sponsored by the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.

     Community Nurses Inc., a home health agency serving Cameron, Elk and McKean counties, received a grant from the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust. John Kowach and Don Fleming of the Palumbo organization presented the check to Brenda Porter, RN, of the Community Nurses. Her group will use the money for "Maestro," an integrated clinical and business software program, and further development of Adult Day Services, a center that offers weekday care for adults who need supervision due to a physical or mental limitation.

LYMAN RUN REFILL MONDAY
      There could be some lateseason recreation at Lyman Lake in Potter County, now that the state has cleared the way to begin re-creating the lake starting on Monday. The go-ahead comes after a seven-year process of demolishing an earthen dam, building a new one, testing and permitting.

ITEC SOON TO BE OCCUPIED
      A Meadville company is close to taking over the former Industrial Technical Education Center in Ridgway to turn it into a new training center, to be called Precision Manufacturing Institute (PMI). Details were discussed at a board meeting of Northcentral Pa. Regional Planning and Development Commission last week.

      Cameron County Genealogy Club will tour the Potter County Historical Society Museum on today (Saturday). Community members and others interested should meet at 9 am at the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library in Emporium for a brief session and departure for Coudersport.

Worker of the Year
      An Elk County man has been honored for his dedication to Dickinson Mental Health Center. Michael De Stefano of Ridgway, who serves as clinical director, was named Social Worker of the Year. De Stefano has been an employee of Dickinson's for 42 years. The center provides mental health, mental retardation and prevention services in Potter, Cameron, Elk and McKean counties.

      20 A legislative study released this month documented a 20- percent decrease in the number of Pennsylvania anglers from 2001 to 2006. Nationally, the decline was 12 percent. 2.5M A Bensalem company that converts old tires into rubber landscaping mulch has inked a deal with Wal-Mart to recycle the tires that customers leave with that chain's 3,000 U.S. stores.

     Austin's Treasure Chest Mission Store on Main Street celebrates its first anniversary with a sale coming up next Friday through Sunday. It's operated as an outreach program by the United Methodist Church of Austin, offering affordable clothes by the season, along with household items. Operating hours will be 11 am to 4 pm on each day of the anniversary observance. Refreshments will be available. GRANT TO BOOST WEST NILE VIRUS MONITORING
      Mosquito populations in Potter and Cameron counties will continue to be heavily monitored for signs of West Nile virus this summer, thanks to a state grant. Potter and Cameron counties will get $49,400 and $20,900, respectively, to purchase equipment and pay employees.

      The music will be loud and full of energy at the fourth annual Teen Tinnitus, set for Saturday, April 12, from 2-8 pm at the Coudersport Consistory. Potter County Suicide Prevention Task Force and Potter County Yellow Ribbon clubs are again sponsoring this event, which features musicians with special appeal to teens.

Area Police Beat
      Gutters stolen Higher prices for copper, aluminum and steel have resulted in an increase in property thefts throughout the region. Last week, state police from Denton Hill were summoned to the village of Genesee, where someone stole about 100 feet of rain gutters from an abandoned building on Commercial Street. The gutters are valued at about $500.

     Music from the sixties was the order of the night during Saturday's Potter County Yellow Ribbon suicide prevention program at St. Eulalia Parish Center in Coudersport. Musicians Larry Herbstritt (left), Jeff Kazimer (right) and Tom Shaffer, performing as "Every Tom, Jeff and Larry," closed out the show with dance music, including several selections from the Beatles. The program was held as a complement to the April 12 Teen Tinnitus festival for the younger generation.
