Local teen preparing for racing season
      Cameron County's teenage racecar driver hopes to take the next step as a defending champion entering the 2008 season. Mark Schweikart, 15, of Emporium, has been getting his red and white 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo ready for the April 26 lid-lifter at the McKean County Fairgrounds Raceway in East Smethport.

Falcons move to 4-0
      Coudersport is off to a 4-0 start in high school softball, coming off Wednesday night's 3-0 win over visiting Kane. Pitcher Karli Duffee tamed the Wolves with nine strikeouts while walking just one and scattering four hits. Maureen McCusker doubled and Megan Hau cracked an RBI single for the Falcons, who had just five hits.

Slugger with Lancaster team
      Port Allegany native Brian Stavisky, once on the doorstep of major league baseball, is taking a career detour this season. Stavisky, an outfielder, this week signed a contract with the Lancaster (Pa.) Barnstormers, a professional baseball team based in the Freedom Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

Hornung hurls a no-hitter hitter
      Garrett Hornung pitched a no-hitter and David Lyon was a one-man wrecking crew with his bat as the redhot Cameron County varsity baseball team rolled to a 15- 0 win at Otto-Eldred Thursday night. Lyon, a switch-hitting catcher, had four hits, including a home run, and drove in six runs as the Red Raiders improved to 4-0.

Named football coach
      For the first time since the mid-1970s, Coudersport High School has a head football coach whose last name isn't Simcoe. School Board members Monday night made official what Endeavor News had reported last month: Brendon Hathaway has been chosen to succeed long-time coach Paul Simcoe at the helm.

Late rally gets Bradford by Lady Raiders
      A strong Bradford team held off a late rally to defeat visiting Cameron County, 8- 4, in varsity softball competition on Wednesday. Pitcher Shelly Fuhrman kept the Red Raider bats at bay with no-hit pitching until the sixth inning. Shelby Summers tripled, while Alexis Narby and Katelyn Basgall each singled for Cameron County (0-3). Tasha Smith pitched a complete game.

Pitch, hit and run next weekend
      Austin Baseball Association will host a free local round of the national Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition on Sunday, April 20, at 2 pm at the Gary Williams Memorial Baseball Fields. Registration will be from noon until 1:30. Competitors are divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14.

Golf outing
      Bucktail Lodge Fraternal Order of Police will hold its annual golf outing on Wednesday, June 11, at the St. Marys Country Club. Cost is $50 for members and $60 for non-members. It covers 18 holes, cart, beverages on course and a dinner buffet. Additional information is available by calling 781-1315 between 8 am and 4 pm.
