      The chorus of spring peepers coming from the nearby wetland was so loud that it hurt my ears. I stood on the edge of the old field at dusk, straining to hear over this thunderous amphibian choir. I was here to witness an annual nightly spring performance. The stage was almost set. The awkward-looking fellow would soon begin his first act.

Applications now being accepted for elk licenses
      Hunters hoping to be selected for one of the 45 elkhunting licenses being issued by the Pa. Game Commission this year may now apply. A public drawing will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Pennsylvania Elk Expo to distribute 17 antlered and 28 antlerless licenses.

Boat ride for mothers at Sinnemahoning
      Moms can ride for free and receive a small gift as part of a Mother's Day pontoon boat excursion Sunday at Sinnemahoning State Park. The 45-minute tour explores the George B Stevenson Dam, wetlands and wildlife, with a focus on bald eagles. There are three different times to ride: noon, 1:30 pm and 3 pm.

Kids' Fishing Derby May 24
      A Kids' Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 24, at Brooks Run, north of George B. Stevenson Dam off Rt. 872. Registration will start at 9 am, with the derby running from 10 to noon. This event, sponsored by the Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Club, is open to children under age 13. Food and refreshments will be available. For more information, call 546-2835.

Sportmen's Club plans derby
      Members of the East Fork Sportsmen's Club will hold their annual Kids Fishing Derby on Sunday, May 25. A chicken barbecue will be held the same day. Club members are also encouraged to turn out for upcoming work details on May 31 and June 7. Work will begin at the clubhouse at 8 am.

Fishing derby set for June 1
      Plans are in place for the 54th annual Drum and Henry Fishing Derby, to be held on Sunday, June 1, at the Bucktail Rod and Gun Club. Committee members have been busy raising funds and making arrangements. They welcome financial contributions to cover the purchase of 1,500 trout, hot dogs and soft drinks and prizes.
