Drum & Henry fish derby set for Sunday

A popular Cameron County tradition, the Drum and Henry Children's Fishing Derby, will be held on Sunday at the Bucktail Rod and Gun Club.

It's a success story that dates back more than a half-century.

Its name is retained as a tribute to the event's founders, Norm Drum and Ed Henry, who began the derby with the help of volunteers at their camp pond. People came from miles around.

Sunday's 54th annual derby will run from 1 pm until 4 pm and is open to anyone 14 or under. Each child who registers will receive a free hot dog and soft drinks.

Each child will be allowed to catch three trout. The use of artificial lures is prohibited; bait fishing only will be allowed. No alcohol or pets will be permitted on club grounds. Funds come through donations from local businesses, as well as a gift from the Emporium Foundation.

Organizers report that the pond remains closed to adults through Sunday, June 15, so that anyone 14 and under can continue to fish there.
