Emporium teen dies in ATV crash
      An Emporium teenager was killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash last Saturday in Shippen Township. Police identified the victim as 19-year-old Clifford E. Akins. Troopers report that Akins lost control of the four-wheeler while traveling at a high rate of speed on May Hollow Road, less than one mile west of Sterling Run Road, at about 3 pm.

JUDGE DEALS BLOW TO ADELPHIA VICTIMS
      A number of businesses and individuals who lost millions of dollars in the 2002 collapse of Adelphia Communication Corp. suffered a major blow this week. A federal judge dismissed their claims against heavyweights Citigroup Inc., ING Group NV, Bank of America Corp., Deutsche Bank AG, and hundreds of other financial institutions and investment funds.

Three school projects in high gear
      Work continues on more than $8 million of improvements to three Coudersport Area School District properties. Much of the work will be completed in time for the start of classes in the fall.

Sixth 'Dam Show' July 18-19
      Nationally known musicians and local performers will entertain at the sixth annual Dam Show, scheduled July 18-19 at the Austin Dam Memorial Park. Art Metzger of Coudersport, an originator and organizer of the eclectic music festival, has recruited a full lineup of musicians, headlined by two standouts: Michael Cleveland and the Hackensaw Boys.

      Wood pellet plant KANE -- An Elk County man has announced plans to operate a wood pellet plant in the former Holgate Manufacturing building on Wetmore Avenue in Kane. Ray Alexander of St. Marys has purchased the building from Northcentral Pa. Regional Planning and Development Commission. He hopes to have the plant in operation as soon as January.

New bridge under way to Driftwood
      Work has begun on a new Johnson Run Bridge on Route 120 in Driftwood Borough. The current concrete slab structure will be removed and replaced with a pre-cast, concrete box culvert. Contractor on the $700,000 job is CH&D Enterprises of New Stanton. The bridge is being replaced one lane at a time.

Defendants ordered to state prison
      Two Emporium men will serve time in state prison after Judge Richard Masson handed down sentences on Tuesday. Matthew Cash Grimone, 19, pleaded guilty to felony charges of burglary and criminal trespass. He broke into and damaged property at a camp on Hunts Run in August. In September, he removed gasoline from a garage at Sylvan Heights.

Lawn mowing required
      Coudersport Borough property owner are being reminded that they must mow their lawns. A borough ordinance requires that lawns be mowed on a regular basis, according to Borough Manager Marlin Moore. Grass must be cut before its height reaches eight inches.

      Donations are needed for this year's Independence Day fireworks display in Emporium. The show is scheduled for Friday, July 4, with a rain date of July 5, at the Cameron County High School.

Summer Camp set this week
      A Coudersport business is again offering a Summer Art Camp. Olga's Art Studio has set camps for June 23-27 and August 11-15. Budding artists ages six through 16 will participate in painting, drawing, sculpture, knitting, jewelry making, egg decorating, glass painting, Tshirt painting, and other multimedia creations. Camps will run each weekday from 10 am to 3 pm.

      It was a short ride Monday for the Bike and Build cyclists staying the night at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Coudersport. They left Wellsboro Monday morning, and the last few, after taking a scenic detour of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, pedaled into town just after 3:30 p.m.

      13 Pennsylvania has slipped to 13th place nationally in potato production. However, the state is number one in chipping potatoes. Seventy percent of the potatoes grown in Pennsylvania are made into chips. Pennsylvania had 25,000 acres of potatoes planted in 1984. Today, the figure is around 14,000 acres.

Classes at community pool
      Swimming lessons and water aerobics classes get underway Saturday at the community pool at Cameron County High School this summer. Water aerobics classes run from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on Fridays through Mondays. Swimming lessons will be held on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:15 am, 4:30 to 5:15 pm; 6:30 to 7:15 pm; and 7:15 to 8 pm.

      Sizerville State Park will be the setting for the Local Emergency Planning Committee/ Citizen Corps Council meeting on Wednesday, July 9.       Corruption charge filed An Emporium man was remanded to the Potter County Jail in lieu of bail after he was cited by police for several charges stemming from a May 8 incident. Devanair Woods faces counts of criminal solicitation, corruption of minors and unlawful contact or communication with minors.

Hobbit, Fair Festival: 'Good debut'
      Fun and fantasy were in the air Saturday at Keating Summit during the inaugural Woodland Hobbit and Fairy Festival. Organizer Bonnie Wood, who got into the act herself with appropriate costume, said Saturday's turnout at her Hemlock Springs Historic Crafts and Cultural Arts Center was gratifying and will likely result in the festival becoming an annual tradition.

Strawberry festival July 5
      Coudersport New Century Club will once again hold its popular Strawberry Festival at the courthouse square. It's an Independence Day holiday tradition. This year's festival will be held on Saturday, July 5. NCC spokesperson Ilene Altenhein said volunteers are needed to assist with the serving of strawberry shortcakes and sundaes.

      Dickinson Mental Health Center is observing the 50th anniversary of its founding by spotlighting some of its services to Cameron, Elk, Potter and McKean counties. Among DMHC's programs is a forensics department that addresses the mental health needs of offenders in the criminal justice system.

STUDENTS TO SEE HIGH MEAL PRICES
      Meal prices will be increasing slightly for Austin Area School students, following action by the school board at its June meeting. Lunches for elementary and secondary students will cost five cents more for each of the next three years, rising to $1.40 for elementary students and $1.50 for secondary students by the 2010-2011 school year.

      Coudersport Borough is looking to cash in on the region's natural gas boom by leasing property to mining interests. Borough Manager Marlin Moore said the borough recently received offers for leasing subsurface rights to a pair of borough properties: the 63-acre old dump out the Left Branch of Dingman Run Road and the 99- acre White Farm property.

Works of Heather Chilson, Lindsey Francis, and Naomi Keller will be featured for several weeks at the hospital's MAC Connecting Link. Community Art Showcase program began in February.

      E.O. Austin Home/Historical Society will dedicate a "town clock" in Austin during a community picnic on Sunday, July 6. The Newburgh style clock, the town's first, will stand 11 feet, six inches tall. Additional details will be announced.
