Summertime bounty
      Late summer is a time of plenty in the region's forests. Berries abound as a food source for a variety of wildlife, ranging from rodents to birds and bears to deer. Humans relish many of these tasty little fruits, as well. First of our summertime berries to ripen are low-bush blueberries.

Strip deputy game officers of powers?
      At the same time the Pa. Game Commission has been scrambling to recruit deputy game officers locally, a state senator is trying to strip deputies of some of their authority. Sen. Gibson Armstrong of Refton, Lancaster County, introduced the legislation after an encounter his son had with a deputy in York County.

Hike, CCC program at Sizerville
      Summer activities continue this weekend at Sizerville State Park in Cameron and Potter counties. A hike on the Bottom Land Trail will start at 3 pm Saturday. Bug repellent is advised. Hikers should meet at the environmental building across from the park offi ce.

Volunteers needed for deer study
      The Game Commission is calling for volunteers to serve on a Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) to help set deer management goals in Wildlife Management Unit 3A. It includes those sections of Potter, McKean, Tioga and Bradford counties north of Rt. 6.

East Fork Sportsmen yard sale
      Vendor space is available for the fifth annual East Fork Sportsmen's Club Giant Yard Sale, set for Aug. 1-2 at the clubhouse. This fund-raiser for club activities is open to the public. Club members who donate a quality item for the club's sale may set up their own table for free.

Firewood on state land
      Firewood on state land District Forester Jeanne Wambaugh reports that a permit is required to cut firewood on state forest land. Cost is $10.00 per cord. Permits cover standing dead and downed trees, with the exception of black cherry. Additional information is available at the Elk State Forest office in Emporium.

Hunter education course set
      Bucktail Rod and Gun Club on Sizer Run Road, near Emporium, is holding a hunter and trapper education course July 28 through Aug. 1, from 5:30 to 8 each evening. Students must attend all five sessions to be eligible for certifi- cation. Registration will be held at the July 28 session.
