PA. DEFENSE SCORES ONE FOR THE BOOKS DURING 'BIG 3O'
      Dominating defense led Pennsylvania to a 27-0 rout in Saturday's 35th annual Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Football Classic. How dominating? With players from Cameron County and Coudersport playing major roles, the Pennsy defensive held the Empire Staters to just 62 total yards. It's the lowest offensive production in the long history of the game.

ALLE-CATTS STILL ALIVE
      Emporium fell to Kane in the Alle-Catt Amateur Baseball League playoffs Sunday, 5-3, after trouncing visiting Cuba (N.Y.) just a day earlier. Paul Baker's two-run homer was one of the few bright spots for the Emporium offense at Kane. Losing pitcher Ryan Bresslin chipped in with a double and a single, while Garrett Horning cracked three singles.

Troutman, Laurelwood pool winners
      Gary Troutman was honored as the top shooter in the Coudersport Pool League, which closed out is season recently. Troutman recorded 53 individual wins to edge Paul Herzig and Lester Taylor, who had 48 each.

Englesman honored at Wilson
      Coudersport High School graduate Sarah Englesman was awarded the prestigious Pentathlon Award by Wilson College, in recognition of her performance in multiple sports, as well as her leadership and active involvement in other college affairs.

Valenti chosen for scholarship
      Austin Area High School graduate Rayna Valenti was one of five student-athletes chosen for a $1,000 college scholarship through proceeds of the annual Big 30 Golf Scramble. Awards were based on scholastic performance, athletic participation, citizenship and extracurricular activities.

Scholastic sports start Monday
      Practice sessions open on Monday for area high school football, volleyball, soccer, golf and cross country teams. PIAA rules prohibit organized practices prior to Monday.

Golf event Wednesday
      A golf tournament to benefi t Potter County Habitat for Humanity will be held at the Coudersport Golf Club on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Volunteers are needed to line up sponsors, door prizes and participants. Last year's Eagles for Habitat tournament raised about $3,000.
