ANOTHER BOOST FOR ASD
      Students will be learning interactively in all classrooms when the Austin school doors open for the 2008/2009 school year. Thanks to grants and the support of Williams Transco, every educational room in the school will have either a SMART Board or a Promethium Board. The boards allow for teachers and students to work interactively with a computer from the screen.

SPCA LOOKING FOR LAND FOR A NEW ANIMAL SHELTER
      More than a year after the Pa. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) began looking for a site in Potter County to build a new animal care center, the issue may soon be resolved. Progress has been slow on the plan to close the PSPCA animal adoption center near Wellsboro and build a new one to service both Potter and Tioga counties.

'INTENSIVE CARE MANAGERS' HELP HUNDREDS
      A team of professionals at Dickinson Mental Health Center in Ridgway helps a client base of about 300 challenged citizens in Cameron and Elk counties through "intensive case management" (ICM). Goal is to provide support to families who need help to face many of life's everyday challenges.

Wellness Program
     Stackpole-Hall Foundation presented Dickinson Mental Health Center Children's Prevention Services with a grant to fund a wellness program. It is being operated in partnership with Elk Regional Health Center, area schools and other organizations. Students will also be educated about depression, obesity and coping with emotional pressures.      There are fewer choices for motorists to fill their gas tanks in Emporium with the demise of two filling stations on the west end of the town. DRUG TESTING SUCCESS IN COUDERSPORT
      A federally-funded drug testing program in Coudersport Area High School has been an apparent success in lessening marijuana use among students. In a news release issued this week, Vice Principal Sean Reams reported that there was an estimated 12 percent drop in marijuana use among students during the program's first year, which coincided with the 2007-08 school year.

AREA POLICE NEWS
      Jail guard charged A guard at the Potter County Jail has been suspended without pay for allegedly providing a mobile telephone for his wife's son, who is an inmate. State police at Denton Hill have charged 43-year-old Edward G. Davis with a misdemeanor count of passing contraband to an inmate, resulting in Davis's suspension by Sheriff Ken Sauley.

GUILTY VERDICT IN DRUG CASE
      One of the suspects charged last fall in a crackdown on drug trafficking was found guilty during a trial at the Cameron County Courthouse on Wednesday. Jurors convicted Sarah Petitt, 24, of Johnsonburg, on a charge of possession and delivery of a prescription painkiller.

      A senior-level economic development position is being established at North Central Pa. Regional Planning and Development Commission. With Bill Bogart of Cameron County casting a dissenting vote, board members at North Central agreed to create the position of "director of community development and regional planning.

MULTIPLE CHARGES FILED
      A Coudersport man is facing multiple charges of sexual abuse for repeated assaults of two Potter County girls dating back to 1995. David A. Thomas, 46, has admitted to the offenses, according to state police from Denton Hill.

ELECTION DAY CHANGES
      Things will be a little different on Election Day for Coudersport Ward I voters and county employees alike. The Board of Commissioners approved changing the voting location for the first ward from the courthouse to the cafeteria and gymnasium area of the Gunzburger Building, a former elementary school on North Main Street.

A MUSICAL MEMORIAL TO THE REV. BOB MERTEN
      Potter County's famous rock 'n roll band from the '60s, Ollie and the Go Gos, will reunite later this month to benefit a cause that's near and dear to all of the band members. It will be a night of music, reminiscing, dining and dancing -- a community scale class reunion -- scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Hotel Crittenden.
