COUDERSPORT BORO LEASING LAND FOR OIL, GAS EXPLORATION
      Coudersport Borough Council agreed to lease two properties for oil and gas exploration for $60,000 Wednesday night. Members approved the bid from Pennsylvania General Electric Co. based on a recommendation from Borough Manager Marlin "Mud" Moore and Solicitor Dan Glassmire.

School superintendent sought
      Coudersport Area School District will eventually have a new superintendent, but no one can say when. "I think we will find somebody in the next 60 days," said School Board President Tim Watson at this month's meeting. His comments came in response to residents questioning why Superintendent George Nuffer was still serving, when his contract had expired in June.

CJ' Lehman on road to recovery
      A three-year-old Cameron County boy is smiling more often these days as he continues his recovery from a rare form of cancer. Cameron James "CJ" Lehman, son of Jim and Lorah Lehman of Rich Valley, was practically adopted by the Emporium community last year after he was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma.

Campground expansion okayed
      Owners of a large campground in central Potter County are making a statement about the region's future with their plans to nearly double the size of the facility. Plans for a major expansion of the Potter County Family Campground atop Denton Hill received the go-ahead Tuesday night from the Potter County Planning Commission (PCPC).

Empereon adding to workforce
      Two officials from Empereon Marketing reported this month that the company's Coudersport workforce is now up to 130. Tim McCratic, general manager of the Coudersport customer center, and Steve Bodnar from the company's New Mexico division, were guest speakers at a Coudersport Rotary Club meeting, held at the Laurelwood Inn.

Animal abuse crackdown coming in Pa.
      Animal abuse enforcement activities are being stepped up across the state, according to an announcement by the Pa. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA). Enforcement officers are already sworn-in to cover 27 counties, including Potter, and will be in place for all 67 counties by December, according to Howard R.

      DUI Strike Forces are operating from now through Labor Day in every Pennsylvania county. Purpose of the enforcement patrols is to deter motorists from operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance. Motorists will see extra police enforcement, including sobriety checkpoints.

IU9 starting education program in Potter
      An "alternative education" program will be starting soon for students in Potter County's five public school districts, operated by Seneca Highlands Intermediate Unit 9. At last month's IU9 meeting, Ron Mancia, director of special education services, announced that IU9 is teaming with the school districts and the Potter County Board of Commissioners to start the program.

Train crash funds available soon
      Area organizations will be trying to qualify for part of the $2 million civil settlement from a 2006 train derailment that affected a pristine trout stream in Cameron County. Sinnemahoning Stakeholders Committee is accepting applications for funds from the settlement between the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection and Norfolk Southern Railroad.

      Homeowners, businesses and local governments looking for new ways to conserve energy can register for updates on the state's new $650 million Alternative Energy Investment Fund. Rebates and other financial incentives are included. The Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection will provide email updates on the programs, including how to apply for funding.

      Potter County Veteran Affairs Director Joe Becker is reminding all military veterans who served in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations between Aug. 2, 1990, and Aug. 31, 1991, and received the Southwest Asia Service Medal they may be qualified for the Pennsylvania state bonus for that period.
