Hemlocks under attack
      Things aren't looking good for hemlock forests in the Sinnemahoning watershed. Unless something changes, it is the beginning of the end. An exotic insect pest, the hemlock woolly adelgid, is destroying hemlock stands throughout the eastern U.S. A large area of infested hemlocks was discovered on the lower end of Wykoff Run in Cameron County.

     Advancing technology is giving outdoors men and women yet another edge in pursuing trophy whitetails. Trail cams, which have been around for years, but have only recently become affordable and reliable, are enabling deer hunters to scout even when they are unavailable. This trail cam caught these two nice bucks just before dark in Cameron County.

ELK LICENSE DEADLINE APPROACHING
      Hunters looking to participate in this year's Pennsylvania elk season have until Friday, Aug. 29, to apply through the Game Commission's website, pgc.state.pa.us. Deadline to submit a paper application has passed. Applicants must place a $10 non-fundable application fee on their credit card to be included in the drawing.

BOBCAT LICENSE DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 2
      Hunters and trappers seeking to participate in Pennsylvania's upcoming bobcat seasons have until Sept. 2 to submit an application via the Game Commission's website, pgc.state.pa.

DOE' LICENSES STILL BEING ACCEPTED
      Antlerless deer license applications are still being accepted by mail for wildlife management units (WMU) that are not sold out. A section of the Game Commission website, pgc. state.pa.us, allows hunters to see how many licenses are left in each WMU.

BUGLE' VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
      Sinnemahoning State Park is looking for people who are interested in learning more about the Pennsylvania elk herd and who would like to help visitors. "Bugle Corps" volunteers operate the Wildlife Watching Areas along the Elk Scenic Highway on weekends during the elk rut in September and October.

DMAP LICENSES AVAILABLE
      A list of Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) properties remains available on the Game Commission website, pgc.state.pa.us. The site lists private and stateowned lands open to hunting with a DMAP permit. Qualified landowners receive a limited number of coupons that they make available to hunters who redeem them for a DMAP antlerless deer permit.

WEEKEND PARK PROGRAMS
      Sizerville State Park in Potter and Cameron counties has two educational programs scheduled for Saturday. At 3 pm, "The Green Menace" will feature information for children on the emerald ash borer, a little invasive beetle with a huge appetite.

Tips for watching elk in the region
      Visitors to "elk country" in Cameron and Elk counties stand a better chance of seeing the animal if they follow some basic guidelines. Best viewing times are the hour or two after dawn, or just before dusk. The Pa. Game Commission has partnered with the Pa. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources to develop public viewing sites to accommodate tourists.
