Mercedes Schwartz of Smethport has artwork on display at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital's Irwin Medical Arts Center as part of the hospital's Community Art Showcase. She is a self-taught, award-winning artist who uses oils, pencils, pastels, watercolors and also does photography. Schwartz was a piano teacher for 50 years and has taught cake decorating, watercolor, calligraphy, and acrylics classes. Chairman Betty Wei said artists are featured for about six to eight weeks. Things aren't looking good for hemlock forests in the Sinnemahoning watershed. Unless something changes, it is the beginning of the end. An exotic insect pest, the hemlock woolly adelgid, is destroying hemlock stands throughout the eastern U.S. A large area of infested hemlocks was discovered on the lower end of Wykoff Run in Cameron County.
