Severe drought snapped?
      Thursday's rainfall broke a long dry spell throughout the region. Up until August, we had been receiving consistent rainfall throughout the summer. Streams were low, but everything in the forest and garden was green and growing well.

ANTLERLESS LICENSES SOLD OUT
      Antlerless deer licenses have sold out for all area wildlife management units (WMU). Licenses sold out quickly in WMU 2G, which encompasses all of Cameron County and those parts of Potter and McKean counties below Rt. 6. Just this week, the supply was exhausted in WMU 3A, which covers the sections of Potter and McKean counties north of Rt. 6.

Sizerville pool to stay open
      Sizerville State Park swimming pool will be open for the holiday weekend, Saturday through Monday, from 11 am to 7 pm, weather permitting, and then close for the season. The concession stand will be open during the same hours.

VACATION HOUSE TO OPEN
      An open house for the area's newest vacation lodge will be held this weekend near Keating Summit. Gathering will be held at the Red Bird House from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and 1-5 Sunday afternoon. The rental, along Gardeau Road, can accommodate up to 10 people.

'Revved up & ready to rut'
      Two weeks ago, while driving through Benezette early one morning, I observed a 7x8 bull elk that had recently rubbed the velvet off of his antlers. With testosterone levels rising, he already had that wide-eyed look that bulls get during the rut.

'08-'09 Waterfowl seasons in place
      Pa. Game Commission has set the 2008-09 migratory game bird hunting seasons and bag limits. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approval is expected by late September. A decline in the canvasback duck breeding population and poor habitat conditions have made it necessary to close the season this year.

Guided elk watch Sept. 6
      There will be a guided elk watch at 5 pm Saturday, Sept. 6, starting from the Sinnemahoning State Park office. A program will focus on the habits of the eastern elk and its habitat needs.

Elk Expo schedule announced
      Plans are in place for the eighth annual Pennsylvania Elk Expo on the fairgrounds in Kersey, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20. Highlights will include a drawing for elk-hunting licenses and a wide variety of seminars and educational exhibits.

Bobcat license deadline here
      Hunters and trappers seeking to participate in Pennsylvania's upcoming bobcat seasons have until Tuesday, Sept. 2, to apply via the Game Commission's website, pgc.state.pa.us, to be included in the drawing for one of the 1,435 permits.

PGC PROPOSES WOODCOCK PLAN
      The Game Commission is seeking public input on its draft woodcock management plan, which can be reviewed on the agency's website pgc. state.pa.us. Developed by Bill Palmer, biologist, the plan summarizes population trends, habitat relationships and trends, hunter impact and other factors.
