FOOTBALL TEAMS GO ON THE ROAD
      High school football season opened across the region on Friday night, where field conditions were expected to be soggy. Cameron County follows its season opener against Kane with a trip to Ridgway on Friday night, with opening kickoff at 7.

Raider boys look tough in golf
      Forecasts of a successful season for the boys' golf team from Cameron County are likely right on target. Josh Strahl felt comfortable on his home course, firing a medal round of 40 as the Red Raiders swept Port Allegany and Austin by identical 40-15 scores in the season opener.

Lamer leads Panther golfers
      Desiree Lamer, a girl playing on the boys' golf team at Austin, shot a solid medal round of 48 as the Panthers defeated Port Allegany, 33 1.2 to 21 1.2, in the season opener at the Emporium Country Club. Chip Sinnamond was second for Austin and second overall with a 50. Also scoring for the Panthers were Caleb Nichols (53), Ben Simms (53) and Brian Brooks (54).

Falcon girls roll over Smethport
      Coudersport came home from Smethport with a convincing 36-19 girls' golf victory. Angela Smoulder and Hannah Fink tied for medalist honors with scores of 54, one stroke ahead of Hubber April Alfieri. Also scoring for the Falcons were Tori Brown (58), Keri Hamilton (59) and Emilee Bertrand (65).

Storm shares football league lead
      Cameron County and Johnsonburg have emerged as the early-season powers in the Central Pa. Youth Football League. A 50-yard touchdown run by Tony Olivett was among the highlights as the Cameron County Storm varsity (ages 11-12) rolled over Reynoldsville, 23-7, on a hot Saturday afternoon in Emporium.

After setbacks, Russell heading back to Arizona
      Former Coudersport resident John Russell is returning to Arizona, where he will participate in the Senior Baseball National Championship Tournament. Russell, who turns 54 next month, is a first baseman and pitcher for the Metro Rebels from the Washington, D.C., area.

Emporium teen driver repeats as champion
      Fifteen-year-old Mark Schweikart of Emporium continues to make a name for himself in area auto racing. Schweikart took the checkered flag at Saturday night's Pure Stocks season championship race at the McKean County Fair Raceway to claim the 2008 driver points title. He had to hold off Curt Pastorious down the stretch.

Kinney returns to mound
      After sitting out the entire 2007 baseball season, Josh Kinney of Port Allegany is back on the mound and could get to the call to return to the St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff as soon as next week. Kinney has made two flawless appearances for the Cardinals' Class AA affiliate in Springfi eld, Missouri, where he is serving a rehabilitation assignment.

      All-terrain vehicle riding has become a popular recreational pastime in northcentral Pennsylvania. Businesses along Rt. 6 in central Potter County will capitalize on it Sept. 13-14 during the ATV Jamboree Swap Meet.

Allegheny swimmer emerges triumpantly!
      About a month after dipping her foot in the headwaters of the Allegheny River near Raymond in northern Potter County, 21-year-old Katie Spotz of Mentor, Ohio, emerged triumphantly at Point State Park in Pittsburgh. She's apparently the only person on record to swim the entire Allegheny.
