COUDERSPORT BRIDGE PROJECTS CLOSER
      Construction on Coudersport's Fourth and Seventh street bridges remains in the 2009 crosshairs. During the Borough Council meeting Wednesday, Kevin Bailey, PennDOT project manager, said the bid-letting is set to begin in April and the foundations for both sites have been approved. Those projects now need Harrisburg's approval, which shouldn't be a problem.

      Weather conditions are expected to create brilliant fall foliage in the coming weeks, according to Marc Abrams, a professor of forest ecology and physiology at Penn State University. Recent precipitation has relieved stress on many species that traditionally produce the most colorful leaves, Abrams said.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICARE SCAM
      Scam artists are calling people around the state in an attempt to steal their identity, using reference to Medicare benefits to pry personal information from their victims. Callers claim to be Social Security employees and try to convince victims that they must acquire new Social Security or Medicare cards. They then ask for personal and bank account information.

     Stan Swank, owner of Coudersport's Jubilee Foods, celebrates the business's anniversary by giving shoppers free hot dogs and soft drinks. Starting out at what was previously the Market Basket as a part-timer, Swank worked his way up the management ladder and eventually bought the business. He is deeply involved in Coudersport Area Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Group activities, currently serving as Chamber president. Swank has also held "steak bakes" and other promotions to support non-profit organizations.

      Wanted for rape Charges of rape and related offenses have been were filed against James L Jackson Jr., 34, of Emporium. A warrant has been issued for Jackson's arrest following the filing of charges before District Judge Alvin Brown. No details were released.

     The monthly Austin Senior Group meeting was held Monday, September 15 at the Methodist Church inAustin with nearly 20 in attendance. Guest speakers were Patrice Levavasseur, executive director of patient and community relations, and Jennifer Rossman, coordinator of community outreach and volunteer services, at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital. Following lunch, Rossman outlined the hospital's Community Benefit Advisory Committees that meet twice annually, and public relations and community outreach initiatives at Charles Cole. Levavasseur discussed new services and medical providers at Charles Cole. The presentation ended with a question and answer session and feedback from the group on improving patient experiences. The group was reminded that CCMH will offer free flu and pneumococcal vaccines this fall to adults through an Adult Immunization Grant and administered by CCMH and the Pennsylvania Department of Health Office of Aging.

Gospel Tabernacle opens new sanctuary
      Coudersport Gospel Tabernacle launched its next half-century of service with a consecration ceremony at the church's new sanctuary on Sunday. The Rev. David Minor Sr., a driving force behind the founding of the church in 1957, conducted the service as parishioners and guests formed lines around the perimeter of the new building.

      A half-century after he started the Coudersport Gospel Tabernacle in Coudersport, the Rev. David Minor has seen his sons being called to continue his legacy at their own pace and in their own way. He has also witnessed many other relatives and parishioners spread out across the globe to spread the gospel and serve others.

These numbers are in the news.
      38 Next Saturday, Sept. 27, is National Hunting and Fishing Day. The observance can be traced to a movement launched 38 years ago, when the first to suggest an official "day of thanks" to sportsmen was Ira Joffe, owner of Joffe's Gun Shop in Upper Darby, Delaware County. Gov. Raymond Shafer adopted Joffe's idea and created "Outdoor Sportsman's Day" in the state.

The old Emporium Hardware building at the corner of Fourth and North Broad streets, is looking shiny and new with a new coat of red 'quickwall' being applied. C&C Masonary Contractors are doing the work. The building is owned by the Masonic Lodge.

GUILTY VERDICT IN DRUG CASE
      Jurors last week convicted one of the suspected drug dealers nabbed last fall in Emporium. Bryan Andrus, 21, of Emporium was convicted of selling 30 pills to a confidential informant on July 19, 2007 and marijuana to another on Aug. 12, 2007.

WORK ON NEW VISITORS' CENTER SET FOR APRIL
      Members of the Cameron County Board of Commissioners reported last week that they've been notified that work will begin in April on the new visitors' center at Sinnemahoning State Park. Commissioners reported that Isc Design Associates of Somerville, Mass., has filed require notifications to start work on access roads and the building itself.
