Magical time of year
      Summer has transitioned to autumn, almost without notice. Unseasonably warm September weather and dry conditions have left the illusion that summertime has not yet passed us by. Nevertheless, a look at the calendar or the surrounding landscape reveals otherwise.

     Wayne Hunt, the Pa. Game Commission's wildlife conservation officer for Cameron County, discussed the region's unique geography and its rich history as guest speaker at a recent Emporium Rotary Club meeting. Hunt filled the WCO vacancy in March after graduating from at the Ross Leffler School of Conservation in Harrisburg. He previously served as a deputy under Elk County WCO Doty McDowell, with occasional assignments in Cameron County. He also worked on land management and habitat improvement.

Two Potter County hunters have names drawn for elk licenses
      Two Potter County hunters are among 45 selected to receive elk-hunting licenses for the Nov. 3-8 season. Brian Nolan of Shinglehouse is one of 17 applicants who will have an opportunity to hunt for an antlered elk, while Galeton's Gerald Foster had his name drawn for one of 28 cow licenses during Saturday's Pennsylvania Elk Expo in Kersey.

      Sometimes on an autumn morning during the elk rut, Mother Nature's morning show provides fascinating entertainment. Just when I think I've seen it all, I realize that elk- watching is full of surprises. One late September, with the rut in full swing, I watched a 6-by-7 bull poking the ground with his antlers in a grassy area.

Sportsmen plan winter feeding
      Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Association is making plans for another active wildlife feeding program in the coming winter. At this month's meeting, club members were informed that corn will soon be purchased and dates for distribution will be announced. Turkeys and deer are the target game species of the club's winter feeding activities.

Sled dog races return Nov. 1-2
      Canadian American Sledders will hold their annual Sinnemahoning State Park Dry-Land Event on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-2. The sanctioned sled dog races will include caninecross, bike-joring and cart races. The event will also feature craft demonstrations, vendors and refreshments, opening at 9 am each day.

Guided elk watch planned at park
      Next guided elk watch will be held Saturday at 5 pm, starting from the Sinnemahoning State Park office. It will begin with a short discussion of elk-watching tips, followed by a trip into the elk range. Registration is required.

     Coudersport native Tim Heimel had noticed this great blue heron wading in the remnants of his pond for several days, but could never get close enough for a photo. Finally, he zoomed in and took what he could get. "These huge birds are easily spooked, but they sure are enjoyable to watch," said Heimel, who has an impressive nature photo gallery on the internet, hosted by betterphoto. com.
