GAS WELL FIRE EXTINGUISHED

Specialists from Texas were finally able to quell a roaring gas well fire that burned for almost two weeks near the southern Potter County community of Cross Fork.

There were no injuries and no structures involved in the fire at a Dominion Transmission Inc. gas well just over the Clinton County border in Leidy Township.

Fire broke out at a well which leads underground to a storage system in the area know as the Greenlick Field. Dominion operates one of the largest under ground natural gas storage systems in the country.

The fire was declared out at 8:25 last Thursday. Dan Donovan, public relations director for Dominion, said specialists were able to install a valve on the wellhead to close off the gas flow.

Donovan added that an investigation continues to determine how the fire started and how much natural gas was consumed. The well where the fire occurred will not be used again until all the pipes are replaced.

Clinton County Department of Emergency Services managed the fire scene, assisted by the Kettle Creek Hose Company of Stewardson and Leidy townships and the volunteer fire department of Renovo. Pa. Dept. of Environmental Conservation and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission were also involved in the response.

"Wildcats" called in from Texas built a protective chimney to isolate the fire as they decided how to extinguish it.

Dominion is primarily a provider of gas transportation and storage services. The largest of those storage areas is in the Tamarack area of Clinton County. Dominion uses several former natural gas fields in the Tamarack area to store fuel.
