A well-known Coudersport area man was the victim of an accidental drowning on a fishing trip in Canada. Ontario Provincial Police confirmed over the weekend that the victim was 76-yearold Harland Bergstrom of Hebron Township, north of Coudersport. More ... More ... A forest fire in October 1938 claimed the lives of eight Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) members as they attempted to extinguish the extensive blaze. A few climbed onto a large sloping rock to escape flames. The landmark at the summit of Pepper Hill, known as "Survivor Rock," will be the site of memorial services planned for Saturday, Oct.18, as part of a 75th anniversary celebration of the CCC. Tour buses will leave the courthouse in Emporium from 10 to 10:30 am. Bus tours will later take place at Sinnemahoning State Park, the Little Museum at Sterling Run and the CCC camp at Hunts Run. A service and wreath placement will be held at Memorial Springs at 4 pm. Cameron County Historical Society is sponsoring next weekend's observance. On Sunday, there will be a memorial mass at 10:30 am at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Dinner will follow at 2 pm at the Emporium VFW, following a 1930s CCC menu. A state police fire marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of a blaze that swept through a mobile home in the small community of Oswayo Wednesday afternoon. A spokesman said the structure was owned by the Martin family. It was engulfed in flames by the time volunteers arrived and was described by officials as a total loss. Initially, there were some tense moments as volunteers were informed that a handicapped individual may have been trapped inside the burning home. The alarm was sounded at about 1 pm, just as Shinglehouse volunteers were gearing up for fire prevention programs at both the elementary and high schools in Shinglehouse. More ... Many of the people who played a role in development of a massive mural on the side of a prominent building in downtown Coudersport gathered on Saturday to dedicate that unique artwork. Sarah Curry and Judy Johnston Yaggie spearheaded the project, with help from artists and art students, donors, community volunteers and others. It depicts a storytelling scene in which an older man shares memories or tales of yesteryear with a diverse group of children.
