LOCAL WILDFLOWER PARADISE
      This past summer I crossed paths with a local woman who is a true expert in the field of wildflowers. For the last several years, Barbie Smith and her husband John have been working to develop a native wildflower preserve on North Creek in northern Cameron County consisting of a large expanse of woodland with a several-acre meadow in the center of the property.

Cougar attack hoax reignites debate
      A probe into a reported cougar attack in Lancaster County has turned into another type of investigation. A story circulated by newspapers, TV newscasts and internet chat services contended that 42-year-old Samuel Fisher was attacked by a mountain lion along Mount Pleasant Road in Sadsbury Township.

Rewards offered for those who help nab poachers
      Deer-poachers are taking a toll in Cameron County and several other regions of Pennsylvania, prompting the Game Commission to crack down and open up a toll-free hotline for anyone willing to provide tips. Wayne Hunt, wildlife offi cer for Cameron County, described a disturbing trend he has discovered.

Youth 'Jakes' event planned Saturday
      Cameron County Longbeards will be holding a "Jakes Field Day" on Saturday at Bucktail Rod and Gun Club on Sizerville Road, north of Emporium. It will be held from 1-4 pm, rain or shine. The local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation plans several activities to attract the interest of young people and promote turkey hunting and conservation.

Bowhunter dies after falling from tree
      A Massachusetts man died accidentally last Thursday while hunting in Hector Township, Potter County. State police said 78- year-old Thomas Kinny was climbing into his tree stand and fell, getting his leg stuck in the crook of the tree. Kinny remained stuck for about three hours until his hunting partner found him.

Lower fee for new hunters
      The Pa. General Assembly is considering legislation that would encourage new hunters to try out the sport for one season at a reduced cost. While the number of hunters in Pennsylvania has declined over the past 25 years, about 30 percent of nonhunters have an interest in trying the sport.

Bid for 2009 elk license?
      Another move is afoot to have the state raise funds for elk habitat improvements by selling an elk-hunting license by auction. Rep. Dan Surra of Elk and Clearfield counties has cosponsored a bill that would allow for the sale of one license each year by competitive bid.
