COMING GAS/OIL BOOM MEANS JOBS
      Estimates are being developed on the number of jobs that will be created and the overall economic impact of Marcellus shale natural gas production. Companies are acquiring rights to properties where the gas deposits are believed to plentiful in the shale formations located thousands of feet underground.

12 AUSTIN RESIDENCES SCHEDULED FOR WATER SHUT OFF
      Water service will be cut to as many as a dozen homes in Austin Borough Monday if the owners of the properties fail to make payments or payment arrangements over the weekend or first thing Monday morning when the borough office opens at 8.

     Students at Austin School were treated to a living history of recorded music last week with a visit by John Peet of Coudersport. John is an antiques and music buff who used part of his collection of music boxes, Edison cylinder players, wax records, and compact disks to bring to life the history of recorded music. He was accompanied by retired Austin Area School teacher Julia Kolat who read a piece about the history of music boxes. From Stephen Foster's "Dixie" played in multiple parts on a sophisticated 1880's music box, through a speech by President McKinley on wax cylinder recording, to the Surround Sound of a Bose speaker system, the students were immersed in the history of sound. Kindergarteners through sixth graders enjoyed the program in Art Metzger's science classroom.

      Antique Seekers of Cameron County has announced additional details for this year's Holiday Home Tour, to be held on Sunday, Dec. 14, starting at 2 pm. Five Emporium homes will be open for viewing. Tickets are available for a donation of $10 at Emporium Pharmacy, Barbara Moscato Brown Library, Chamber of Commerce, Aroma Cafe and Maureen's Beauty Shop.

VOLUNTEERS NEED TO DELIVER MEALS
      Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to the Coudersport community as part of an expansion of a local ministry. Helping Hands Ministry, based at the Coudersport Gospel Tabernacle, provides meals to those who are facing a major disruption, loss of a loved one, surgery or arrival of a baby. Elderly also are visited.

SENTENCINGS IN DRUG CASES
      Several defendants were sentenced by Judge Richard Masson in Cameron County Court. Sara A. Petitt of Johnsonburg was ordered to spend from six months to two years in a state penitentiary for possession of drugs with intent to deliver, following her conviction in an August jury trial.

HELP WITH HOME HEATING BILLS
      Thousands of residents of Potter and Cameron counties are eligible for assistance with their winter heating bills through the Pa. Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). County Assistance Offices are now processing LIHEAP applications. Eligibility is based on income. Individuals with annual income of $23,110 are eligible for assistance.

     Long-time Coudersport radio personality Gerri Miller has launched a new venture on the internet. She has left Radio Station WFRM after almost three decades as a manager, news director, producer and announcer to start "Black Forest Broadcasting." It's a news, music and information service found on the internet at www.gerrimiller.com. Meanwhile, former WFRM general manager David Lent, who left the station in the 1980s and built his own radio station, WHKS, in Port Allegany, has returned to manage WFRM-AM. A sale of WFRM-FM 96.7 to the Backyard Broadcasting chain was recently completed. Additionally, a sale of WFRM-AM by majority stockholder and station founder Cary Simpson is imminent.      Austin Cub Scouts chose an interesting way to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11. The group traveled to Eldred to visit the World War II Museum.       A business plan is being developed to bring a "community mercantile" to Coudersport. Under the plan, community members would buy shares in the organization in order to establish a large retailer downtown, probably offering clothing and footwear. BRUNCH IN AUSTIN SUNDAY
      There will be a Sunday Brunch on Nov. 23 at the Austin Firehall from 8 am until noon or until it's gone. Brunch includes pancakes, eggs, toast, sausage, homefries and a drink. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 4-12 and children under 3 get in free. There will be a Chinese auction and 50/50 tickets. Hunters are welcome.
