GKN layoffs routine, temporary Ripple effects of the worsening national economic crisis continue to be felt at GKN Sinter Metals in Emporium. Dave Brennan, human relations manager, announced this week that some 550 employees will be laid off from Dec. 17 through Jan. 5. Brennan hastened to add that the temporary layoffs during the holidays are, for the most part, routine. Some of those employees will be taking vacation hours during the shutdown, he said. Much of the local plant's trouble can be traced to the severe cutbacks by the U.S. automobile industry. Other powdered metal plants in the region are also suspending at least a portion of their operations during the holiday season, Brennan said. GKN, which produces powdered metal components, has facilities at Airport Road and Cameron Road. |
