      6,000 Business owners in Emporium reported about $6,000 in sales during Christmas in the Wilds observance on Dec. 13. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Lorson praised the work of the store workers and others in the community who welcomed visitors.

RAILROAD CAR WILL BE OPEN TO COMMUNITY GROUPS
      Community organizations may someday be able to hold meetings in a restored railroad car positioned at the Coudersport Arboretum. Additional details on the Coudersport Lions Club's plan to bring the car to the park were shared at last week's Chamber of Commerce meeting by local banker Steve Erway, a charter member of the Lions.

      An Emporium man will serve more time in state prison for selling cocaine. Justin Austin, 20, currently in state prison on other charges, was sentenced last week by Judge Richard A. Masson.

EMT TRAINING SET FOR JAN. 5
      Cameron County Ambulance Company will be holding an emergency medical technician training class starting on Jan. 5. Classes will be every Monday and Wednesday as well as three Saturdays. Cost is $110 per student, which covers required materials.

COUNTY LABOR DEALS PENDING
      New labor contracts are pending with unionized employees at Potter County Human Services and the Potter County Jail. Tentative agreements were reached by the Potter County Commissioners with bargaining teams from each on new threeyear labor contracts, succeeding agreements that expire on Dec. 31.

COWBURN'S SOLID BODY GYM EXPANDS
      Cowburn's Solid Body Gym has expanded its operations in downtown Coudersport. Trainer Chad Cowburn operates the business, which includes a fitness center, massage therapy and other services at 207-209 North Main Street. Personal training, Tae Kwon Do, tanning, self-defense and jujitsu are offered.

      Tri-Town Fire Company of Ulysses has elected officers for 2009. Mike Hager will be president of the board of directors, while Roy Hunt will be fire chief. Other officers are Ken Wingo, first assistant chief; Jeff Barber, second assistant chief; Matt Seeley, third assistant chief; Earl Jordan, vice president; Pam Hunt, secretary; and Eric Petsch, treasurer.

      Fire chief killed Goodyear Hose Company Fire Chief Timothy R. Martin was killed in a snowmobile crash sometime Sunday morning near his home on Germania Overlook Road, south of Galeton. Police said Martin, 32, was at the controls of a snowmobile that struck the rear of a parked, unoccupied car.

      A Cameron County Area High School senior is collecting cell phones to raise money for the March of Dimes. Pauline Gavlock's school project is focused on helping to fund research, education, community services and advocacy programs for improving babies' health.

SCIENCE TEAM COMPETES
      Cameron County High School students Chelsey Morrison, Jourdon Britton, Joey Botera and Grant Vassallo competed in the "Chain Reaction Contraption" at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh. The team took home eighth place with a contraption designed to unwrap a present. There were 27 teams participated. Also attending was teacher Jennifer Olivett.

'RIGHT TO LIFE' BUS TRIP SET JAN. 22
      Elk/Cameron Right to Life group is organizing a bus trip to the "March for Life" event in Washington D.C. on Jan. 22. The rally is a peaceful protest against abortion. Departure is from the St. Joseph Benedictine Convent parking lot on Maurus Street in St. Marys at 4:15 am. The group is expected to return at 4:40 pm. Cost is $3.00, which does not cover food expenses.

LIONS PLANNING CHILI DINNER SET
      Coudersport Area Lions Club will go to bat for the Potter County "Meals on Wheels" program once again with its third annual chili and dessert dinner, to be held on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Coudersport Firehall. The home-delivered meals program, operated by Potter County Human Services, has a waiting list as a result of funding limitations.

STATE HIKES GAS AND OIL PERMIT FEES
      State officials have approved new fees for Marcellus shale gas drilling permits that will replace the flat $100 permit fee with a variable fee structure based on well depth. Added revenue will also enabled the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection to hire additional staff to process permits and monitor drilling activities.

      Students from Cameron County and Coudersport often square off in spirited baseball, football and basketball competition. Last week, they met on another playing field: the debate platform. At issue was whether the state should ban the use of mobile phones while driving.

     Coudersport audiologist Bob Campbell was delighted to find an ample supply of "packing snow" over the weekend. It brought back memories of childhood and inspired him to revive a seemingly lost tradition. The results of his work stands seven feet tall, greeting all who travel east on Allegany Avenue in the borough. "I got a little tired of seeing the blow-up plastic snowmen that seem to be everywhere these days," Campbell said. "I was surprised to have a couple of kids come up to me as I was building it and say they had never seen a real snowman."

DEFENSE LAWYER'S ILLNESS POSTPONES DRUG DEATH TRIAL
      Trial of a Cameron County woman facing charges in the death of an Emporium resident has been postponed until March. Jurors had been selected to try Shawna Coffman, 26, of Sinnemahoning, but her lawyer's illness has forced the Dec. 29 trial to be postponed.

      A kick-off for Cameron County's Hometown Mentor Organization (HMO) has been rescheduled for the spring. Members had planned to hold a technology-themed celebration next month, but postponed it due to the potential for poor weather, Executive Director Cathy Ostrum said.

LOANS FOR YOUTH PROJECTS
      A federal agency, the Farm Service Agency, makes operating loans of up to $5,000 to eligible individual rural youths age 10 through 20 to finance income-producing agriculturerelated projects. Work must be educational, and initiated, developed and carried out by rural youths participating in 4-H clubs, FFA, or a similar organization.

EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE TO SENIOR CITIZENS
      An equipment loaner program is available for Potter County residents age 60 or older. Equipment and assistive devices are often donated to the Potter County Area Agency on Aging for use by those in need. Seniors may use loaner items, but these must be returned in good condition when they are no longer needed.

COFFEE HOUSE MUSIC SUNDAY
      A coffee house will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium on Sunday at 6 pm in O'Connell Hall. St. Mark Choir and Folk Group will provide entertainment and sing-a-longs of Christmas carols. Those attending are encouraged to bring Christmas cookies to share.

      Several of the approximately two dozen employees of bankrupt Adelphia Communications Corp. still on the job in Coudersport have been notified that their jobs are being eliminated. The Adelphia estate continues to wind down operations more than six years after the company tumbled into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
