Two of the contenders for the Northern Tier Boys' Basketball League championship shot out of the gate with victories as the season got underway Monday night at four venues. Cameron County (3-1) won its league debut with another contender, Port Allegany, in impressive fashion, 55-29. More ... Port Allegany's Brian Stavisky expects to continue his professional baseball career with the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Stavisky, 28, a lefthanded hitting outfielder and first baseman, was signed last week by the Phillies as a minor league free agent. More ... Cameron County pulled out a 30-28 win over Oswayo Valley in an abbreviated varsity wrestling match in Shinglehouse last week, with no entries at 112, 119 or 130. Randy Schatz improved to 6-0 by taking care of his 160-lb. opponent in 56 seconds, while Hunter Bardo needed just over a minute and a half to pin his foe at 189. Bardo's record is 4-2. More ... Bob Foster added another notch to his belt, exploding for a 721 set in the Monday Men's Merchant League at Mountain View Bowling Center. Sophomore Jenna Matzinger added 13 points and senior guard Kayla Bohn continued her offensive surge with eight tallies, including a pair of three-pointers. More ... A 60-33 win at Ridgway last week ran Austin's record to 5-0 in girls' basketball, entering the Panthers' early Northern Tier League game and holiday tournament at Port Allegany. Elker turnovers and fast-break baskets propelled Austin, who shot out to a 31-14 halftime lead. Whitney Crosby led all scorers with 18 points. More ... Visiting Cameron County employed a successful stall late in the game beat Ridgway, 54-41, in boys' basketball last week. Solid defense helped the Red Raiders open up a lead after a close first half.
