Peterson won't seek new term

U.S. Senator John Peterson
Northcentral Pennsylvania will lose much of its seniority in the U.S. Congress when Rep. John Peterson's term concludes at the end of the year.

Congressman Peterson, a Republican from Pleasantville, announced Thursday that he will not seek re-election for the 5th District seat. He said he reached the decision "after a great deal of consideration and discussion with family over the Christmas holiday."

A former state lawmaker, Peterson said he plans to remain in the area and be active in public affairs. He cited "a few chronic, non-threatening health issues" that will require him to spend more time at home than a congressman's career would allow.

A recognized legislative advocate for rural causes, Peterson has also strongly supported economic development and increased domestic energy production. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1997 after spending 12 years as a state senator.
