School nurse injured in Afghanistan

Port Allegany Elementary School nurse Richard Berrettini, deployed to Afghanistan as a member of the U. S. Army Reserve, was seriously injured Wednesday when his convoy was attacked.

Berrettini has been on military leave since being called to active duty last February and was scheduled to return to his job at the school early this year.

He reportedly suffered severe burns, along with injuries to his liver and spleen and a broken leg.

Following treatment at a hospital at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Berrettini is expected to return to the U.S. to continue his recovery.
