Maxine Hazel Cuba Maxine Hazel (Miller) Cuba, age 82, of Hermitage, formerly of Emporium, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2008) in the Ball Pavilion at Brevillier Village in Erie where she had resided for several months following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her daughter and her daughter's extended family at the time of her passing. Born in Blawnox on Aug. 16, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Gerald and Stella (Secrist) Miller. Raised in Reynoldsville, Maxine was a 1944 graduate of Reynoldsville High School. On June 12, 1948, she married Richard M. Cuba, who died Feb. 18, 1998. They resided in Emporium until 1967, when they moved to Hermitage. Maxine enjoyed swimming and playing volleyball both with friends and at the F.H. Buhl Club. She also enjoyed playing cards. She was a competitive bridge player and was a member of several bridge leagues in the Shenango Valley. In her later years, she especially enjoyed playing Shanghai with close friends and family. She also enjoyed playing her keyboard and frequently volunteered to entertain residents at local nursing homes. She was a member of Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church of Hermitage and was a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Mark's Parish in Emporium. She is survived by a daughter, Carol, wife of Gerald Stauffer, of Erie; and son Thomas, husband of Doreen Cuba, of Mohnton. Other survivors include a loving sister, Bettie Hamaker, of Reynoldsville; five grandsons; Christopher, husband of Krista Stauffer, Dennis Stauffer, Travis Stauffer, Nathan, husband of Kate Cuba, Jared Cuba and three great-grandchildren; Ashley Stauffer, Emily Stauffer, and Kyle Cuba. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald "Sonny" Miller, who died in 1950. Calling hours will be on Sunday (Jan. 6, 2008) from 2- 4 pm and from 6-8 pm at the Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home, 264 East State St., Sharon, PA. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday (Jan. 7) at 11 am at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church of Hermitage, where the Monsignor Edward J. Zeitler, Senior Associate, will officiate.
